Amazon's Lord of the Rings spin-off The Rings of Power and HBO's House of the Dragon (a Game of Thrones prequel) are set to return to the screen with their second seasons in 2024.
Netflix continues to invest in the genre (e.g., The Witcher Season 4), while the production of the third season of Amazon Video's adaptation of Robert Jordan's epic fantasy The Wheel of Time is also underway.
Undoubtedly, big money is involved in the quest for the next "Game of Thrones."
OK, I hear you; throwing money at things is not always the solution:
With a $465 million budget, Amazon's first season of The Rings of Power received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 38% audience rating, and on the Amazon site, you will see a disappointing 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Perhaps some of the disappointed 63% of U.S. viewers who allegedly never finished watching the show turn back to Tolkien's original and the many other epic stories found in good fantasy books.
Whatever the case, the entertainment industry's massive investments in fantasy greatly benefit the fantasy book genre.
In the Kindle market, we have seen the sales rank of the Epic Fantasy category reach a new highest-ever last month.
While Fantasy Romance books (which we'll cover this March) play a role in the soaring sales rank, we still see a thriving overall interest in "escapism" in the form of fantasy.
So, it is time for us to examine what sells best in epic fantasy these days:
