More than 23% of those 215 Romance top-sellers—almost one out of every four—involve paranormal/fantasy tropes.
In other words, where vampires, shifters, or aliens fall in love, there is money.
The boundaries between paranormal romance, fantasy romance, and urban fantasy romance have become increasingly blurry as different reviewers describe the same books with all those technical genre terms.
In line with overall romance market trends, we saw a continued shift towards more fantasy (less urban) worlds and darker tropes and characters.
The teen and young-adult vampires you know from the good old days of "Twilight" fifteen years ago seem pretty lame and tame compared to the protagonists of many top-selling PNR novels today.
Today's dominance of indie authors in the segment is remarkable.
While traditional publishers essentially seemed to have lost interest in the segment after the Twilight Saga craze, indies continued to do three things:
– Serve the existing PNR readers,
– develop and claim almost any conceivable sub-trope and genre blend
– as a result, capture and grow the fan base.
