Within romance, we find more than 100 sub-markets. One of the bigger sub-genres is historical romance.
For fans of this genre, 2022 saw another boost by the second season of Netflix's Regency-era series Bridgerton, adapted from Julia Quinn's series of historical romance novels.
According to Forbes magazine, Bridgerton Season 2 has become the most popular English language Netflix series with 627.11M hours viewed.
The Regency-era romance dethroned Bridgerton Season 1 for the top spot.
No wonder the sales rank performance of Amazon's corresponding Regency romance category soared as well after the Season 2 premiere.
But I also want to be totally transparent and candid: Netflix's positive effect on the Amazon sales ranks of the Historical Romance and Regency Romance categories was less pronounced than during Season 1 in 2021.
And the longer-term, slow decline of Historical Romance sales ranks continued, unfortunately.
Yet, there are always good reasons to look into the historical romance genre:
- a strong and loyal readership
- stable global interest levels for "historical romance" and "historical fiction" on Google
- good performance in terms of absolute Amazon sales rank levels
- many sub-niches to target (Regency, Scottish, time travel, world war, ancient times, etc.)
