Last week, my wife and I wanted to give ourselves an anniversary treat and went to an exquisite, highly recommended restaurant. We walked out in shock after 16 minutes. 

The place had hundreds of 5-star TripAdvisor reviews, was in a beautiful part of town, and boasted an illuminated upscale facade. 

All was good when a stunning interior design, the friendly welcome by the uniformed head waiter, and a fine-art menu promised a costly yet memorable dining experience.

Then we were left unattended for a quarter of an hour. No attention, no drinks, no one taking orders—just stressed staff ignoring us and hurrying past our table.

My wife and I gave each other a Mr. Spock-like eyebrow raise, nodded in agreement, and walked out—much to the dismay of that friendly receptionist.

I consider myself patient and very forgiving. So why did we leave?

The answer is simple: The restaurant's promise fell apart. 

The WHOLE proposition became doubtful because ONE core element fell below the bar and no longer matched the whole.

In the same way, book marketing isn't just a matter of finding a beautiful cover and a well-written blurb.

A recent study among 12,000 book consumers revealed 14 actions to decide which book to read, borrow, or buy. And the data identified another 10 factors that made buyers choose to purchase a new book.

Book cover, description, reviews, editorial reviews, recommendations, price, etc.; add the paid advertising and newsletter's messaging plus the book's actual content and reading experience.
