Hi Friend,
After my rose-cutting zen workout in the garden (with my pet dragon "Leafy" 🐉 lending a claw), I took a moment to reflect on what has been one of the most intricate research projects I’ve worked on in a long while: our first-ever Cozy Fantasy report and seminar, now available at K-lytics here. What started as a seemingly simple genre research turned out to be incredibly multi-faceted—and an exciting opportunity. The research was challenging but rewarding.
🎥 The result? A 90-minute seminar video paired with an in-depth 90-page pdf-report featuring the most comprehensive genre discussion I’ve ever done (seriously, it’s the longest! 😅). Why Cozy Fantasy?
We've received countless questions from authors, and the data speaks volumes:
Search interest for “cozy fantasy books” has risen dramatically over the last three years. It now reaches more than half the level of “cozy mystery books,” a mature and well-established genre. For such a relatively new label, that level of growth is remarkable. Over-Simplified At First Glance
Cozy fantasy is a genre that, at first glance, seems straightforward—low-stakes magical stories with a comforting tone, where the focus shifts from epic quests and peril to the quieter joys of community, connection, and everyday magic. It’s a world where enchanted tea shops, charming villages, and heartfelt friendships take center stage, offering readers warmth and wonder.
BookTokers and Bloggers often point to titles like Legends & Lattes, The House in the Cerulean Sea, or Howl’s Moving Castle as defining works of cozy fantasy. While these are undoubtedly influential works and notable examples, they represent only a fraction of the genre’s breadth and depth.
Market Entry By Authors From Many Genres
After going through 7,000 search results, of which only 700 (!) qualified as cozy fantasies, we identified over 12 key defining elements of top-selling cozy fantasies.
Then we mapped out some 20 adjacent genres from where authors are beginning to seek opportunities and lay claims to the “cozy fantasy” label: Cozy Mystery, Paranormal Cozy Mystery, Romantasy, Women's Fiction, Teen YA, LGBTQ+ Fantasy, and GameLit, to name a few (and there are many more). The level of competition is still comparatively low. As always, the early bird catches the worm.
Something In There For You?
📚 If you’ve been curious about this budding genre, the new video and report thoroughly explore the genre's state, market dynamics, top-selling best practices, and emerging opportunities.
On top of that, you'll find detailed breakdowns of sales trends, book supply, best-performing categories, high-selling covers, top authors, publishers, trending keywords, proven price points, standout titles, book descriptions, and more.
I hope you enjoy the research as much as I did putting it together. (First Edition!)
Happy writing, happy publishing!
