Perhaps I was late to the party, but our last year's first-ever research on billionaire romance turned into a smash hit. Time for an update!
I certainly learned my lesson and no longer dodge researching this genre.
When "Fifty Shades of Grey" first came out and started rising to the top of the bestseller lists, I thought this would be a short-lived phenomenon.
That was probably the worst publishing industry prediction I have ever made.
The "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy sold more than 35 million print and e-book copies by 2020, claiming the top 3 spots for the best-selling books of the last decade.
The series triggered many things: debates, a shock to some, media coverage, a blockbuster movie series, you name it.
But it also accomplished something else. It created one of the biggest and most sustained romance novel sub-markets: Billionaire Romance.
While the gravy train may have slowed down for EL James' 50 Shades after more than a decade on the shelves, many new authors who continue to promote, sustain, and earn from the genre have emerged.
Today, Billionaire Romance comes in all "shades of grey" (pun intended), ranging from steamy erotic novels to cowboy romance to wholesome and inspirational romance.
For romance authors, it is certainly a vast market.
