Every genre has various subgenres. That creates both endless possibilities and the potential for the successful use of tropes and formulaic writing. Well, duh.
What I find interesting, though, is that a specific theme, approach, or trope that does well in one genre, e.g., romance, can often be transferred to another genre or at least has a "cousin" in another primary genre, in this case, mystery or thrillers.
Genre Success Analogies
These analogies often come in disguise as they fare under different names or genre descriptors when they cross genre boundaries.
For example, the hugely successful "small-town" concept in romance has translated into massive success in thrillers as "domestic thrillers" and as "cozy" in mystery.
One could also argue that the sustained loyal readership and success of "clean/sweet/wholesome" romance has its match as "cozies" in mystery.
Cozy Mystery Unleashed
Cozy mystery books have undoubtedly grown from a lesser-known niche into a mainstream market.
Google search interest for "cozy mystery books" has increased for ten years and almost doubled in the last 18 months alone. Simply amazing!
Perhaps the success of "Knives Out" in the movie theaters and on Netflix gave cozies a modern remake and fresh air.
And it is promising that Hollywood director Rian Johnson has revealed that Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc will return for a third outing in the Knives Out franchise.
