Stable Growth: The Power of Billionaire Romance
It's been over 13 years since E. L. James' best-selling book and nine years since the popular movie adaptation. You might think readers would have grown weary of the trope by now.
The opposite is true!
Today, the worldwide search volume on Google for "billionaire romance books" is 26% higher than it was five years ago.
And according to our research, the estimated royalties for this genre have also risen by another 6% this year.
From Phenomenon to Enduring Trend
While millionaires and billionaires have been around in romance for ages, "Fifty Shades of Grey" popularized the genre and directly fueled its growth for years.
As the genre diversified, accommodating various themes, tones, and many new authors, it has found its own sources of growth.
Today, Billionaire Romance comes in all 'shades of grey' (pun intended), offering a diverse range of creative possibilities, from steamy erotic novels to cowboy romance to wholesome, inspirational romance, and romantic comedy. Add to this the rise of darker themes such as Mafia romance.
The genre's counterpart in Paranormal Romance is probably vampire romance; vampires never die.
As the stats show, neither do billionaires.
A Dedicated Amazon Category, At Last!
After so many years, Amazon acknowledged that billionaire romance represents a genre in its own right.
Finally, towards the end of 2023, they introduced "Billionaires & Millionaires" as a sub-category of Romance in the Kindle Store.
Thus, we now have more than half a year of performance data to examine the performance of this "new home" for billionaire novels.
