Subject: Bad Timing

Hi Friend,

It feels so awkward sending this email. It is now the third consecutive year that I write to our members and newsletter subscribers about a gloomy subject when Christmas is less than a day away, and everybody else sends out joyful Season Greetings.

It all started back in 2019 when travel to foreign countries was still as easy as buying a coffee at Starbucks. That year, I visited author conferences in the U.S.—e.g., NINC in St. Petersburg, 20BooksTo50K in Vegas...fond memories.

Upon my return to Europe, my publishing schedule had been thrown out of whack. And just the week before Christmas, I squeezed in the launch of the long-overdue K-lytics Post-apocalyptic & Dystopian Fiction report.

And as we want to provide you with annual genre updates, I ended up with dark dystopias and cataclysms as the subject of K-lytics Christmas emails.

Bad timing, isn't it? Or is it?

The word dystopia comes from Greek root words that mean "bad or hard place." Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines it as an "imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives."

Well, look around for yourself. At least when I turn on the television or open a newspaper, I am not sure if we are that far away from such an "imagined world or society."

Perhaps we need more George Orwells, Aldous Huxleys, Ray Bradburys, Margaret Atwoods, and books of the kind they wrote to get people to think, stay alert and see the writing on the wall.

On the "post-apocalyptic" side of things, the irony is that end of 2019 (pre-pandemic), book sales ranks suggested that the trope "disease | illness | pandemic | plague" was the most sought-after apocalypse. I am not sure this qualifies for "write-to-market," but tragically, writers and readers got what they desired when fiction turned into reality. (And, yes, it is still the No. 1 trope!)

The good news for Post-apocalyptic & Dystopian fiction is that sales have stabilized on a solid level this year after a decline that already started before the pandemic. Authors who hung in there now reap the rewards.

Therefore, I am happy to announce our new 2021 Post-Apocalyptic & Dystopian Fiction Market Report.

Overall, this new report examines market segments, sales development, top authors, top publishers, "Virtual Top 100" bestseller list, top categories, keywords, leading cover art, high-selling tropes, Kindle Unlimited vs. Non-KU performance, and more.
