Subject: Author-Generated Book Genres

Hi Friend,

Can authors create trends, marketing labels, brands, cover clichés, or even whole genres?

They certainly can. At least where you find collaborative marketing efforts among like-minded writers who share a purpose or business objective.

The indie-author community has seen many attempts over the years. They range from bearded mountain men book covers to "Academy Romance."

Whether such initiatives stick with the readers is an entirely different matter.

In this context, a K-lytics member pointed me in the direction of a new "genre candidate." I was intrigued and decided to follow those books for six months.

Some genres are undoubtedly more crowded than others. For example, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and cozy mystery have grown into big mainstream markets.

How do you stand out from the crowd?

About a year ago, some experienced authors from these genres decided to define a dedicated place (i.e., a genre) for their books (and readers) and differentiate them from other genres:

The chosen term was "Paranormal Women's Fiction," or PWF. It features powerful heroines kicking their midlife problems to hell with sass, magic, mystery, and adventure.

Think of movies like The Witches of Eastwick or Practical Magic, and you got it.

Over the last 12 months, new titles published under the PWF label have grown sharply by the month. And their sales ranks tell the rest of the story.

Do you want to see a new genre being shaped almost in real-time? Check out this new K-lytics research report:

The evolution of PWF underscores the continued rise in popularity of women's fiction. But not only that. It proves what indie publishers can achieve in no time, thanks to their innovation, agility, hard work, and persistence.

Could PWF be something for your writing or inspire you to develop your own genre-defining ideas?
