Subject: Books on bestseller lists: fresh or vintage?

Hi Friend

Long gone are the days where you could "trick the system" by changing your book's publication date to make your book appear newer than it is. But does it matter anyway? We took a closer look at the 6,400 top displayed titles in the Kindle store.

Here are the key observations:
How old are the books?
  • Broadly speaking, about half of the books are relatively new (53%), meaning less than a year old.
  • 44% are older than one year; in fact, 22% of all displayed books are older than three years. I find this encouraging because it means it that it is possible for a book to have sustainable sales over time.
  • 3% of the books are on preorder.

Is there a tendency towards newer books? - Yes and No.
  • It depends on how you define new, of course.
  • he age bracket with the highest share is 0-6 months (and within it, 0-3 months is leading).

Do newer books sell more copies?
  • Books that have been published less than half year ago exhibit about 60% higher sales than the rest of the published books
  • The differences in average sales per day across all the other age brackets are not that significant

What about pre-orders?
  • The paid preorders are part of the ranking system and represent 3% of the books displayed as the Top 6,400
  • The average sales per day of these preorders are more than double than those of all the published books.

I find this a striking result. At least I have not paid much attention to preorders, yet. Perhaps I should. The numbers suggest that preorders are an effective sales vehicle for some authors and publishers. Such books can also be a good hint at upcoming trends.

What are your thoughts this? - I would love to learn from you:
