Hi Friend!
I saw a meme not long ago that said "I've decided my 2023 will start Feb 1st. January was my free trial month" - that kind of sums up the interesting energies of January!
Actually, January became an extension of December for me as health issues dominated, leading to 2 pending surgeries, one of which is a completely new hip. Turns out the unstable spine was not the whole problem - just a complicating factor. So, being less mobile than normal (and being in physical pain) resulted in more opportunities for contemplation as 2023 dawned.
One of the topics that has been turning over for me, is the extent to which so many of the so-called 'spiritual teachings' we have accepted as truths are revealing themselves to be half-truths, mistruths or outright distortions. It is hardly surprising given that this is a dominating frequency encompassing much of MSM, politics, history, academic institutions etc.
One of those mistruths that is pervasive and that I come across regularly, is the idea of "If it feels light, then it's right, if it feels heavy, then avoid it". Sure, we all want to feel the excitement & inspiration of uplifting experiences, however, a sense of 'heaviness' is not a good measure for deciding whether something is right for us or not. The danger in adopting this simplistic measure to determine whether something is right, can often lead to avoidance of difficult situations (that may be necessary for growth), spiritual bypassing, denial of deeper intuition, choosing the easiest way through and shallowness.
Consider for example, how you 'feel' when having to challenge an abusive authority, a bullying narcissist, or to stand up and say NO to something that is clearly not in your best interests or that will cause harm. It goes without saying, that we have faced many such situations over the past few years, including medical coercion and widespread psycholoical abuse. In addition, we are likely to face circumstances like these at many levels - personally, professionally and societally. The feeling that arises when faced with challenging situations can feel like lead in the pit of your stomach & could definitely end up feeling 'heavy'. Often it would definitely feel lighter or easier to simply walk away, when what is needed is the inner power, courage, strength and self-love to face into the situation bravely.
Let's be honest, most of us would rather avoid potential conflict than lean into it, yet there are times to walk away (light/easy) and times when the right thing is to hold firm and deal with what is presented (heavy/challenging). The archetypal Hero's Journey is a wonderful example of this principle - when you hear 'the call', however it may be presented, there is almost no option but to follow where that call takes you. The hero's journey takes you into the unknown, and numerous challenges that ultimately reveal your deeper essence to you, and lessons that lead to incredible growth and expansions.
That call comes not from a feeling of lightness or heaviness, but of 'Rightness' - a resonance and that infuses your whole body with a deeper knowing. It is a profound realisation that a certain course of action is the right way to go. There is often no logic or reason to this, it is simply a profound inner instruction that cannot be ignored. And sometimes that feels heavy - but the lightness and inner feeling of confidence and strength that you experience on the other side is priceless.
So, next time you are tempted to use 'does this feel light or heavy?', stop for a moment and instead ask your deepest self, your heart flame, "is this right for me". And trust the answer that arises, no matter how uncomfortable that may be at times.
