| "Then went in also that other disciple (John), who first came to the sepulchre and he saw and believed. For as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead" John 20:8,9. "The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones and lo, they were very dry. And he said to me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, you know. Again he said to me, prophesy to these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones; behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live: So I prophesied as He commanded me and the breath came into them and they lived and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army" Ezekiel 37 : 1-10. "Come and let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up. After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His sight" Hosea 6:1-2. | | We all have studied the accounts of resurrection. After the death and burial of Jesus, people were weeping, it was the end of the road for the disciples. They were unable to fathom how the Son of God could have died. In 12 hours everything changed. Jesus, the popular preacher with a mass following across the nation was arrested, branded a criminal and a fake and was crucified. | The disciples were plunged into unimaginable depths of sorrow. Their own loved one and beloved master was now in the grave. He gave eternal hope to them; when they were with Christ, they cared for nothing. Sickness, death seemed nothing. He spread a lavish feast for his friends. But now it was all over in a day. | So when Jesus rose again from the dead, it was a shock to them. Jesus had to convince them, touch them, eat food and prove that He was Jesus. It was that bad. That morning Peter and John examined the evidence at the tomb and came to the conclusion that He rose again. Basically the wrapped strips of linen were intact, the body was missing, the head cloth was removed neatly and folded. It was a hollow wrapped up linen; not torn. Nobody could have pulled out the body in that manner, even Jesus would not have wriggled out, so it was supernatural. Lo He arose! They were happy and went back, two logical fellows. Others like Mary were still crying around till Jesus met her. | The Bible tells us clearly that "as yet they did not know the scripture that He must rise again from the dead". Abraham, David (Ps 16:10, 68:18), Isaiah (53:10, 25:8, 26:19), Zechariah, Jonah, and many prophets spoke of the resurrection of Christ. But the disciples were not into the habit of Bible reading; they were just happy with the anointing, miracles and food. Imagine a David or an Isaiah or a Hosea living at that time; they would have packed food and tea in a flask and camped opposite the Tomb till Jesus rose from the dead. That’s why Jesus upbraids the two disciples on the road to Emmaus as to why they don’t know the full story from the Scriptures. |
