You do not have to write historicals to include historical details in novelsLet Us Begin takes place over three decades, and I included historical details out of necessity and for the authenticity of the novel.
Some of the research I had to do was simple. What kind of cars were people driving in New York in 1968? How much did they cost? What could a low-wage worker afford?
This, as well as many other details, were important to get right. Even though I would consider my novel a contemporary story, it still has historical elements.
Writers of contemporary novels might refer to past events using literary devices such as flashbacks. Or they might simply recall a past event in a conversation, so writers often need to research.
The video I uploaded this week on Youtube is all about adding those necessary details to your stories. |
