Subject: Finding Inspiration in Books

For Readers

Hi Friend

Things I'm excited about as we end this month

1. I've had more time to read! I just finished Matthew McConaughey's book Greenlights, and I enjoyed it. He's an interesting person who makes the most out of every moment which has led him to enjoy an unapologetically crazy life. I was inspired by many of his little insights.

For example he mentions that there are three things - death, family crisis, and newborns - that can shake your world and give you clarity. These three things he says can make you ask:

"What Matters?"

And these three things can make you realize that

"It all does."

I really like that!

2. The second thing I'm excited about is that I have a couple of weeks left to work on edits for my novel before I go back to teaching college students. I worked super hard to get my first draft written quickly, now I'm on my first round of edits. Working on my stories is always exciting!

Follow me on my Facebook Page for more updates on how the book is shaping up.

3. I'm excited that my friend, Margo Candela's book will be released soon, on August 9th. I recommend pre-ordering it See the link below.

For Writers

Getting Your Book Published

I've worked with traditional publishers who buy the rights to publish an author's book, then edit, print, and distribute the book. I've also created my own publishing company and self-published my books

Both options are available to us as writers, but in this newsletter, I'd like to share why I believe self-publishing is such a great option for many writers.

  1. Writers have complete control. This may seem a little scary, but it's a huge advantage because you don't have to wait months/years for your book to be scheduled for release. And you don't have to make changes you don't agree with.

  2. You get to choose the book cover design. I wasn't thrill with the cover for my book Evenings at the Argentine Club, but I did like Say You'll Be Mine. However, I had no input on either of those covers. Traditional publishers do not consult the author unless the author has a huge following and is one of their top authors. And since a bad cover can sink a book, I like to have some say on what it looks like.

  3. Self-published books allow the author to make more money. Authors can also make very little, but if the author works hard, she can make more per book which means she doesn't have to sell as many books.

  4. Easy to publish quickly. If I wanted to and was capable, I could write a book this month and publish it next month. For writers who work quickly and have editors and book designers set up, they do not have to wait months or years to begin selling their books. And it's also easy to get books up for sale on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other digital presses.

  5. An author's books can continue to be marketed indefinitely. Traditional publishers do not market or promote books for long and sometimes, not at all. But as a self-published author, you can continue to promote previous books as you promote your new releases.

Self-Publishing is a lot of work, but it's also fun and fulfilling! If you're thinking of publishing your book, I definitely recommend self-publishing.

Or if you want to learn more about publishing, I have a course, Book Publishing Success that walks writers through both traditional and self-publishing.
