Subject: Exciting Book Festivals to Find Books and Authors

For Readers

Hi Friend,

Are You a Book Lover?

A dumb question, I know. You and I both love books. So, I want to share a bit about a book festival I just attended in Deadwood, South Dakota.

The first thing I'd like to mention is that Deadwood is a touristy town with a main street that looks like something out of the Old West. If you've ever been to Virginia City or any old mining town, it looks a little like that. After people stopped mining and people left to find jobs elsewhere, the town was destined to become another ghost town. In the late 1980s, however, when they legalized gambling in South Dakota, Deadwood got its second life as casinos, restaurants, and souvenir shops filled the streets.

Now that I've set the scene and provided a picture below of an unusually empty main street (during the summer, it's filled with people), let me tell you about this fun Festival of Books that brings together writers and readers every year.

The cool part about this festival is that it's for readers. There are a few presentations for writers, but mostly, the topics are intended to interest readers of every genre. I attended a presentation by a true crime author about cold cases in South Dakota, then another by a celebrity historian who discusses the Constitution and how not all the founding fathers agreed on what should be included in America's most important document. So, I got to learn new things and meet interesting writers.

Unlike some of the writer's conferences I go to, this one felt like a true festival because there is an exciting energy in the air. The presentations were held in different places along the street; you weren't stuck in a convention center all day. Some workshops were in the library, some in the Holiday Inn, another in Saloon 10. During the day, you could take a break and get a delicious cup of coffee, and ice cream, a cool t-shirt, or lose some money on slots.

It's a fun festival, and I highly recommend it if you are a book lover! Plus, what is better than combining our love of books, with a little travel?

Next year, I think they are moving the festival to Sioux Falls.

I think it is always held in September after the high tourist season and summer heat is over.

This year, I attended as a reader to learn about the festival and see what it was about. Next year, I plan to be one of the speakers if they invite me.

For Writers

My Medium Day Presentation is on YouTube

Last month, I mentioned that I would be presenting a workshop session titled "Clarify the Vision of Your Novel by Answering Two Questions" at the virtual Medium Day conference.

If you did not get the opportunity to attend, you can now view it on YouTube.

I also created a longer version of this workshop in a three-hour mini-course. The link is below for anyone interested.

If you are a writer and have questions, you can always email me and I'd be happy to chat with you. Let me know you are a newsletter subscriber because I do get SPAM messages that I do not open.

Until next time!
