New Article: How Do You Know That Your Spare Parts Management Team is Qualified?
Issue #188

Hi Friend,

This week I am addressing a very
significant issue in the area of spare parts management.
How do you know that your spare parts management team is qualified?

One of the genuine issues that is faced in this industry is that people are appointed to spare parts management roles with little or no training. Companies expect that people will 'pick it up on the job' or that some knowledge of the company ERP is sufficient to do the job.

Not only does this undervalue the role, it also results in the wide range of problems that companies experience with their spare parts inventory. Almost all of which are preventable when the dynamics and implications of decision-making are understood.

When people don’t have the right training, they make well-meaning but ultimately incorrect decisions.

Corrosion Protection of Spare Parts

Too often when I visit storerooms around the world I see components that are held as spare parts but where corrosion has, in some cases, ruined the part. Or at least made it unfit for use – which in practical terms is the same thing. In far too many storerooms, corrosion is largely ignored and it may only be when someone comes to need the part that the corrosion gets any attention.

A spare parts numbering system is a way to differentiate items within your spare parts inventory without constantly referring to long descriptions. It is short-cut for spare parts identification.
