Why A Critical Machine Part is NOT the Same as a Critical Spare Part
Hi Friend,

Working through critical spare parts management can seem like a maze. We know that there is a path but are not sure which turns will get us through.

Often it is a process of hit and miss. Lots of dead ends.

Before stepping into that maze, let's take a step back.

Before deciding how many of an item should be stocked, the first question to ask is: should the item stocked at all?

One of the issues with managing spare parts inventory, used for operations and maintenance support is that deciding what to stock can often be an emotional rather than a rational decision.

This is because the decision is often left to the perception of an individual who uses little or no data and who decides on a ‘just in case’ basis.

Is the item critical or not?

In this article I address:
  • That emotional decision-making is particularly prevalent with spare parts inventory
  • A key cause of incorrect criticality assessment
  • The often overlooked feature that helps define critical spare parts
  • The importance of failure mode assessment

Ultimately, a critical machine part is not the same as a critical spare part.
