I have been having conversations with colleagues and clients about the use of audio recordings to help in trauma recovery.
Two recent conversations captured my interest ... one from Thomas Lamb founder of SelfCare and relaxdeeply.org. and author of a CD called "An authentic treatment for PTSD" Stop the pain of the invisible wound. The other from Terry Woodford, Owner of Audio-Therapy Innovations Inc., and producer of "Heartbeat lullabies" which perform like a musical hypnotic. These Heartbeat Lullabies are therapeutic music tools that elicit what is called the "Relaxation Response".
Both Thomas and Terry recognize the importance of body ability to release chemicals and brain signals that make your muscles and organs slow down and increase blood flow to the brain. The term "Relaxation Response" was coined by Dr. Herbert Benson, (professor, author, cardiologist, and founder of Harvard’s Mind/Body Medical Institute). The "Relaxation Response" is beneficial as it counteracts the physiological effects of stress and the fight or flight response. Both of the audio recordings in this episode create a relaxation response which can help you to retrain your brain from anxious arousal to calm reflection
