Rational Choice & Strain Theory explain some behaviors
Ask Dr Anna (S.2.E.2) A young student Kellen wrote to me, saying "I see people on the news doing inhumane things like shootings ,,, etc…I am trying to wrap my head around why people would do these things and what drives them to do it." and "What kind of approach do you take in the treatment of PTSD?" Kellen's question leads us to reflect on several theories that drive people to criminal action such as the Rational Choice theory and the Strain Theory. I also dispel the idea that mental health problems are the reason for criminal acts. Less than 7.5% of criminal acts are directly related to the mental illness. Finally, for those struggling with PTSD after trauma, there are many approaches that help.
