Learn about Adrenaline & Cortisol to help manage stress

Ask Dr. Anna S2. E17

2 Stress Hormones Adrenaline & Cortisol help us get away from danger quickly but they keep us agitated long after the stressful event or danger has passed. Knowing how these hormones work can help you cope with the impact of extreme stress.

Adrenaline works like gasoline on fire- a big burst and flash for energy transport- and then it burns out! If you need to run away, then you need Adrenaline to help you.

Cortisol is released like dense old wood- it catches fire and then burns for a long time- keeping the fire of stress burning.

RECAP
1. Adrenaline is also known as Epinephrine (and is a hormone and neurotransmitter) located on the Adrenal Gland. It results in a big surge to prepare you for fight/flight
2. Cortisol is the slow and steady hormone keeping you activated long after the stress has gone
3. The more chronic your exposure (or reactions) to stress (real or perceived) the higher your levels of cortisol in the body and the more difficult it becomes to relax overall
4. Once you do start to downgrade stress you might feel quite sad, negative and depleted. This is normal. Let it run its course without seeking out stressors to reactivate (otherwise you might find yourself on a stress threadmill)
5. In order to break the cycle you need some type of practice that can settle the stress response quickly and this only ever truly works with regular practices (i.e., breathing, meditation, yoga, etc).

Commit to yourself and grow after trauma.
