Dr Anna Baranowsky interviews Dr. Stephanie Conn author of Increasing Resilience in Police and Emergency Personnel. Dr. Conn, is a former police officer, as well as the daughter and wife of police officers, and currently works as a therapist in private practice, specializing in police stress, trauma, work-life balance, coping and resilience. In the interview we discuss the importance of looking at resilience as a process like physical fitness, sobriety or other activity that you need to keep your skills fresh to excel.Dr. Conn addresses the importance of recognizing that being resilient will not mean you NEVER experience a mental health disturbance but that you will be able to bounce back from it better by bringing resiliency practices into your life.We discuss the impact of moral strain and how to address it as well as how previous trauma exposure can actually be helpful like a vaccine or stress inoculation. The book is filled with Tools for creating resiliency along with meaningful strategies, stories and recommendations, whether you are a first responder, administrator, dispatcher, spouse, family member, etc.Watch right to the end to hear Dr. Conn's recommendations. One of my favorite statements in the book "... Based on animal studies, researchers believe that having prior success in mastering adversity actually changes the brain, called neuroplasticity. This change, in turn, serves to protect against the stress in future adersity." p. 33For information about Dr Conn visit:http://www.Firstresponderpsychology.comTo obtain the List of Pleasurable Activities Visit:
