| | What Was He Thinking?
It was on one of many memorable walks with Fr. Benedict Groeschel. I was discerning the priesthood at Trinity Retreat Center. We were leisurely walking along the shores of New York sound, tossing bread crumbs to the ducks. Fr. Benedict had names for each of them. More, he was talking with them. That's right, not to them, with them.
You have to picture it. You had to wonder what the other walkers passing by thought of this over-sized, hooded Yoda. Hearing him speak with... ducks. It was something. Fr. Benedict seemed to understand
each quack. And while our relationship was warm and easy going, on this occasion I
resisted the urge to apply "quack" differently.
Likely attuned to my unspoken amusement, Fr. Benedict used the occasion to teach me something very important: the role of imagination and wonder in prayer. These are God-given arenas, where God can more personally and fully meet us.
In reflecting upon the Gospel for this Sunday I imagined. I wondered. What was Jesus thinking as He observed one, solitary, raggedy woman contributing from her livelihood, amid many, wealthy others contributing large sums from their surplus?
