WHAT MATTERS MOST
The Lee Atwater Story

What if at a young age you attained your greatest dreams and aspirations? From his youngest years, all Lee Atwater wanted to do was successfully manage a presidential campaign, a peak he attained in his thirties. It's what happened next that really mattered. I'm getting ahead of myself.

Lee Atwater's life was a whirlwind of ambition, political mastery, and profound transformation. Born in 1951, he displayed a sharp political acumen from a young age. By his early thirties, Atwater had ascended to the pinnacle of political consulting, playing a pivotal role in Ronald Reagan's and George H.W. Bush's presidential campaigns. His aggressive and effective tactics were instrumental in securing Bush's victory in 1988, cementing his reputation as a political genius... and as a godfather of negative campaign.

But following this height of his career, Atwater faced an unexpected and life-changing challenge. Diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1990, his meteoric rise was abruptly halted. Or rather we should say, was more fully realized. This illness prompted deep introspection and a dramatic shift in his life perspective. Confronted with his mortality, Atwater sought solace and meaning beyond the political sphere that once defined him.

Reflecting on his life, Atwater said, "The 1980s were about acquiring—acquiring wealth, power, prestige. I know. I acquired more wealth, power, and prestige than most. But you can acquire all you want and still feel empty."

During his illness, Atwater discovered a profound faith in Jesus Christ. This newfound faith provided him with a sense of peace and purpose he had never experienced before. "I have found a new way to live, a new source of strength and a deeper sense of purpose in life. That source is my relationship with Jesus Christ," he shared.

He publicly sought forgiveness from those he had wronged in his political battles, acknowledging the emptiness of his previous pursuits. "I am sorry for any pain that I have caused. I feel a need to apologize to anyone whom I have injured. I have found Jesus Christ. It’s that simple. He has taken away my sins and redeemed my soul."

Lee Atwater passed away in 1991 at the age of 40, leaving behind a legacy of both political brilliance and personal redemption. His journey underscores the transformative power of faith, highlighting that the most worthy pursuit is not found in worldly achievements but in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Through his life and death, Atwater illustrated the profound truth that faith can bring peace and meaning, even in the face of life’s greatest trials.

As Atwater poignantly reflected, "My illness helped me to see that what was missing in society is what was missing in me: a little heart, a lot of brotherhood."

And now you know the rest of the story.

GREAT THINGS
EPISODE 423:
THE GREAT FAMILY RESET:
RECLAIMING OUR HOMES FOR CHRIST.

This episode is for all parents interested in forging faith-filled children. We are Greg and Stephanie Schlueter, parents of six adult children (plus one in heaven) and grandparents of three. We speak candidly about God's purpose for home and how easily relations become splintered. We share a parental practice from our personal experience that has resulted in relational restoration we call "the great family reset."

At heart, we are a world pining to know and live our sacred nature in God. On this occasion of Corpus Christi, we go deep into God's tremendous self-gift in Holy Mass as the capacity for true healing, restoration, and strengthening not simply in the most intimate encounter of Holy Communion but forging us for Holy Community. We discuss some practical challenges and insights for parents of younger children.

Also in this episode, we do a deeper dive into the Gospel:
"Take it; this is my body." (Mark 14:12-26)

And we discuss these consequential news stories from The Loop (CatholicVote.org)
