I Will Do It
This week in the Gospel Jesus is approached by a leper. A social outcast. Not simply impaired physically, but relegated to a life-sentence of rejection. Strictly reinforced by religious law. Religous people.
For starters, it's worth asking: How many of us have felt something like outcasts at religious events, or even church? Not included among cliques? More, when's the last we who are blessed by belonging were attuned to someone outside our comfort zone?
We complain about declining numbers in the pews. And the moral decline in our culture. The languishing among so many around us. It's worth considering: How many are in church right now as a result of our reaching out? How many will be in church as a result of our having Christ's heart and reaching out?
Healing understood at a sufficiently deep level is about redemption. (Pope Benedict XVI) We profess belief that Jesus, who healed the leper, is just as present in the Eucharist. With all the power to heal. In addition to ourselves, right now we all can think of someone in need of this healing. What if, like the leper, we acted in confidence all the more knowing His Answer: "I will do it." (Mark 1:40-45)
