Grandparents, our most important mission is before us.
Please take a moment to complete this quick survey.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Grandparents hold a unique and cherished place in the family and the Church. They are the keepers of tradition, the storytellers of faith, and the living bridges that connect generations with the wisdom of the past and the hope of the future.

It's time we more fully engage them not simply on the periphery of church activity, but in their unique and consequential calling in these formidable years of their lives. In coming weeks we are inviting amazing Catholic grandparents to come together and seek guidance in igniting a Catholic grandparent movement. If that's you, please join us in the first step of filling out this quick survey.

Meanwhile, here are some of the qualities of a godly grandparent meriting our support, prayer, pursuit:

1. Faithfulness to God
A godly grandparent is unwaveringly faithful to God, like Lois, Timothy’s grandmother, praised by St. Paul in 2 Timothy 1:5. Anna the prophetess (Luke 2:36-38) also exemplifies this through her constant prayers and fasting. Today’s grandparents are called to live devoutly, participating in the sacraments and rooted in the Gospel.

2. Wisdom and Counsel
Grandparents bring valuable wisdom from years of experience. Psalm 92:14 speaks of their continued fruitfulness in old age. St. John Chrysostom saw old age as a time of harvest. Jesse, King David’s father, provided guidance to his family (1 Samuel 16). Grandparents today mentor their families with faith-filled advice.

3. Love and Compassion
A godly grandparent reflects Christ’s love and compassion. Proverbs 17:6 says grandchildren are a crown to the aged. St. Joachim and St. Anne, Jesus’ grandparents, are known for their devout life and love. Grandparents foster love and mutual respect in the family, as the Catechism (CCC 2205) teaches.

4. Transmission of Faith
Grandparents play a vital role in passing on the faith. Deuteronomy 4:9 urges us to share faith with children and grandchildren. St. Polycarp, a disciple of St. John, passed down faith through teaching and martyrdom. The Catechism (CCC 2225) highlights grandparents’ responsibility in teaching faith to younger generations.

5. Patience and Perseverance
A godly grandparent exemplifies patience and perseverance. Sirach 25:4 praises wisdom in the aged. Abraham and Sarah waited for God’s promise and were blessed with Isaac (Genesis 21). Grandparents demonstrate God’s enduring love and the importance of steadfast prayer and trust through their patience.

The role of a grandparent is a sacred vocation. It is a call to be a beacon of faith, a fountain of wisdom, a source of unconditional love, a teacher of divine truths, and a model of patience. Let us honor and cherish our grandparents, recognizing them as vital pillars in our families and our faith communities. May all grandparents be blessed with the grace to fulfill their sacred role, leaving a legacy of faith that will endure for generations to come.

Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of grandparents. Bless them with Your love and grace, that they may continue to be faithful witnesses of Your truth. Help them to share their wisdom, love, and faith with their families. May their example lead their children and grandchildren closer to You. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
