GOSPEL | Matthew 22:15-21 The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

with JOHN MICHAEL TALBOT In today's scripture, Jesus takes a coin and asks, "Whose image is on it?" The people respond, "Caesar's." Jesus then wisely advises, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give to God what is God's."
It's a powerful lesson because many at that time expected a political redeemer, someone to bring worldly redemption. However, Jesus redirects their focus, clarifying that the Kingdom He brings is not of this earth; it's a spiritual kingdom. When you embrace the life of the Spirit, you gain something to offer the world. But when you seek a worldly Kingdom, you're bound to be disappointed, leading to frustration, anger, and bitterness. You might claim to bring peace and justice, but there'll be no inner peace to give.
Our true Kingdom is found in God, and it's not of this world. It's an eternal Kingdom. While we engage with earthly matters, we no longer let our egos control us, nor do we push our agendas and opinions. Instead, we seek Jesus. No matter who holds office, Jesus is our constant ruler.
In every situation, no matter where we live or under which government, our King reigns. This brings love, joy, and peace wherever we go. That's my prayer for all of you. So, remember to give to Caesar what's his and to God what belongs to God, ensuring that our ultimate King is Jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. I love you all, and always remember, all things are possible with God.
