BLACKBIRD BY KATHY KESHOCK-KNIGHT
About a year after my miscarriage I was still stuck in a broken place. I'd lift out of it but then go back in. I was spiraling down. I tried to snap out of it for my daughter’s sake. Grace was about three at the time.
She had a dance recital scheduled the day before Mother's Day. I just didn't want to go but how could I not? So, the night of the recital, I put her in her little tiny black leotard and I pinned the little black feathers in her hair. So Kris and I are in the audience and we see these three adorable toddlers run out onstage. They all huddle together and sit in this little circle and lean on each other like they're sleeping. There's this giant “awww” from the audience and the music starts. It's the Glee remake of “Blackbird” by the Beatles. I lost it. An ugly cry. My husband looks at me like “What is going on?” God was speaking to me.
Here's this song about a little black bird with broken wings and sunken eyes that can still learn to see and fly into the light of the dark black night. And it occurred to me that all my life I wanted to be a mom. And I was “just waiting for this moment to arise.” The moment arose. Being a mom. It’s here. And I'm missing it looking back at the plow.
So that night I allowed God's healing into my heart. Watching Grace on that stage I was filled with such joy. Every time I hear that song, over and over again, those feelings come rushing back. I look back and feel like I took this giant step into the light. It was a Luke Chapter 6:38 moment:
“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
