Library Director's Message

Hello and welcome to our October newsletter! We have such a variety of events scheduled this month. Between music, lectures, book discussions, career help and more, we have something to offer just about everyone!

I’m so excited to announce the kickoff of the first ever One Book One Berlin. This initiative is a collaboration between our library, Berlin Public Schools, Berlin Social Services, Berlin Police—and you! Our purpose is to bring the community together to promote reading, discuss ideas, and break down barriers between people.

The featured book for this year’s One Book One Berlin is The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. This thought-provoking work explores the rise of anxiety and mental health struggles among young people in the modern world. Haidt, a renowned social psychologist, delves into the societal and technological shifts that have contributed to this trend, offering insights and solutions for fostering resilience. Through this book, we aim to spark meaningful conversations about the challenges facing today’s youth and encourage the community to come together in support of mental health and well-being. I personally found this book to have the potential to be life changing.

Our first related event, Forever Elsewhere: The Great Rewiring of Gen Z, will be held on Monday, October 21st. A variety of programs and discussions will be held throughout the next seven months so there is plenty of time to read the book and many opportunities to participate. More community events around this initiative will be added as we go along!

I value your feedback and invite you to visit, arrange a personal library tour, or reach out via email to get in touch. Thank you for being part of our vibrant library community! I hope to see you in the library soon.
