Ex-Gay Licensed Professional Counselor Christopher Doyle Asks: What Experience Does Hillary Clinton Have With ‘Conversion Therapy’?

Last week, a tweet from Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton created a national conversation on Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) therapy. “It is time to put an end to conversion therapy for minors,” Clinton stated on Twitter on Jan. 7, and previously on Dec. 21. “We should be supporting LGBT kids—not trying to change them.”

“There are multiple problems with Hillary’s tweet, as she tries to change a vast policy she knows very little about in 140 characters or less, thereby demeaning those who are asking for help with unwanted same-sex attractions,” said licensed professional counselor and IHF Executive Director Christopher Doyle. “She is repeating lies and half-truths that she’s heard second-hand, coupled with the fact that she has probably never met a minor who is struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions and potentially trapped because of the efforts of liberal lawmakers who want to take away therapy rights.”
In 2016, Doyle has a renewed commitment to fight and advocate for therapy equality for all, buoyed by the fact that in 2015, at least 15 states rejected or refused to pass laws to take away the therapy rights of children and their families, despite the efforts of vocal homosexual activists with deep pockets. And the actions of the lawmakers in these states—after they’ve heard the stories of people who were desperate for change and achieved it—is a step in the right direction, Doyle believes.

“One paramount fact is that ‘conversion therapy’ is a misnomer that has nothing to do with my work or the wonderful work of many other therapists and colleagues,” Doyle said. “As a counselor, I am not working to ‘convert’ anyone. Those I work with believe there are specific causes for their unwanted same-sex attractions and gender identity confusion. And I work to help them resolve those issues, affirm their sexual identity and achieve their goals.

“Counselors like me,” he continued, “and those with stories like mine, will continue to offer hope, restoration and healing for individuals, families and communities struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions. Everyone has the right to resolve unwanted desires, attractions and unmet love needs. If someone desires to work through those issues with a counselor, who are we to stop them?”

Doyle, a former homosexual who says that therapy changed his life, is now married to his wife, and they have five children. He has long advocated for therapy freedom and therapy equality, especially as activists fight harder to ban therapies for minors that help them deal with unwanted same-sex attractions and gender identity confusion.

“I struggled with unwanted same-sex attractions for years, feeling stuck between these confusing desires and who I really believed I was. But I knew I wasn't gay. I was confused, and I really needed help.” Doyle said. “I lived it, I overcame it, and I am living proof that therapy does work. My beautiful wife and five kids are evidence of that. Who can argue the story of my life?”

Doyle added that as powerful stories of healing and change are shared with him and his colleagues, they can more effectively work with legislators around the country to strike down proposed therapy bans.
