Dear Moms,
Are we letting our families heal? There is a tendency for families to resist the kinds of deep changes that may foster the healing of individual members of the family. I have seen this over and over in my work with clients and their parents. Perhaps some of you were in the same position when you first started. On occasion, we get an initial call from a mother asking us to “heal” her son or daughter, and I honor each mother who began her journey with us this way. But the reality is that every member of the family needs healing.
The real work of the Institute for Healthy Families is to help families learn the tools and skills to heal themselves, as a family. My work as a counselor is merely to facilitate the healing journey as your guide. In reality, YOU ARE DOING THE HEALING!
Ingrained patterns of behavior within the family as a whole can frustrate persons who want to change behaviors. This is why our Mothers Healing Weekend is so important. As an example, if a member of the family wants to create a new boundary around a certain behavior, the new boundary will affect everyone in the home. If other members of the family do not respect the new boundary, what is the result? Friction that leads to resentment on the part of the person setting the boundary.
One of the topics we review during the Mothers Healing Weekend is how families work together as a whole, how interactions between different personalities can be opportunities for strife or for healing, depending upon how each person responds or reacts to new behaviors.
Based upon my experience, I am convinced that parents, especially moms, want the BEST for their children and husbands, but changing behaviors can be scary, and accepting new behaviors from others can be very difficult. Sometimes, a mom’s unhealed wounds from her childhood prevent her from accepting change and healthier behaviors.
Our healing weekend is a wonderful opportunity to give yourself the gift of healing and learn new skills to implement in your home to facilitate the healing of your children and your entire family.
