Subject: When its all too much

Do this.

Self-care during overwhelm

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed and very emotional lately, you’re not alone.

There is a LOT going on in the world.

There is a lot of upheaval and the sadness, fear and confusion are high.

It’s ok.

How you feel is normal in times of transition.

We are changing and it’s a good thing.

Really, it is.

It is needed.

Things can't stay as they have been.

But change is also difficult.

So look after yourself as we all change.

If you are at all sensitive, an empath or going through something of your own...

Life might be feeling a bit (or very) tough right now.

Here are some tips to love yourself through it.

Do one or all of them.

Pick any that resonate with you.

  • Wake up in the morning and greet yourself with a welcome. I mean really greet yourself. On waking up, or looking in the mirror, say to yourself, "Welcome! I'm happy to see you."

  • Try tapping. I like this four minute exercise with Brad Yates on having an amazing day.

  • Write down five nice things about what you are waking up into this morning.

  • Look after yourself as though your are recovering from the flu or something.

  • Eat well.

  • Rest often.

  • Look for little pockets of time where you can do things that are fun for you and make you feel like you are on holiday right in the middle of your work day. Like go for a walk in your lunch break, listen to a silly audiobook while washing dishes, put on music from your early teens while you are driving.

  • Look for reasons to laugh - think of funny things that have happened in your life and let yourself be tickled by them again, watch non-cynical comedians, read funny books (Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come by Jessica Pan recently had me laughing until I cried)

  • Seek out inspiration - good news stories, volunteer organisations, YouTube and movies that are hopeful and uplifting.

  • Go to ground - slow down, lots of nature time, time with people you love in person, actually schedule video calls with loved ones around the world.

  • Wear comfortable clothes.

  • Sleep enough - go to bed early and sleep.

  • Write down three nice things about yourself.

  • Before going to sleep write down five good things you enjoyed about the day. Call it "Moments I enjoyed today". Look for tiny but moving things like ‘I really liked that moment this afternoon when I was driving and then the sun broke through the cloud just as someone let me into the traffic. It was like it was choreographed and it made me feel good for quite a while after. It makes me feel good again now when I think about it.' Or 'I felt cared for when i remembered to take a bottle of water with me today.' or 'It felt good when that woman greeted me so warmly.'

  • Drink enough water during your day.

  • Take vitamins if you need them.

  • Look after yourself.

Be kind to yourself.

You are doing very well in the midst of all this.

Be kind to others too.

If you loved yourself, what self-caring thing would you do now?
