Carolyn Myss says real healing occurs when you are no longer afraid of the thing you need to heal from.
Isn't that fascinating?
It means you can heal from something while you still have it!
If you have an illness, or anxiety, or depression, or your family relationships are messed up, or you struggle with money, or your weight...
It doesn't have to be gone for you to be healed.
What?! How does that work?
Well, the core of this definition of healing is making peace with your 'stuff'.
Which of course is enormously difficult to do.
I mean, if you have cancer, or you just can't stop comfort-eating, or you drink more than you should, or you battle depression or anxiety daily...
HOW on earth do you make peace with that?
How do you stop being afraid of this thing that endangers your life or your wellbeing?
Here it is.
The secret to not being afraid of something.
It is trusting you'll be ok - even if you don't know it will turn out well.
Or even if you already know it won't.
Let me explain.
Think of when you're a child and you're scared of something that's coming - an exam, a move, a new school, losing a friend - what you really, really want is a bigger, stronger, wiser someone to come and hold your hand and tell you it's going to be ok.
Then, even if you still have to go through that scary thing, their presence makes you feel braver and the challenge feels easier to bear.
The things that are hardest and scariest for us to face, are usually or things about our life or our health, or parts of ourselves, that we judge as not ok.
"It shouldn't be like that!"
This is the stuff we find hard to accept, never mind love!
And yet, that's where the healing lies.
Accepting these things, and learning to take small loving actions towards ourselves, gives us that longed-for feeling that someone is watching over us, supporting us and making sure we get what we need.
That's when we don't have to be afraid of the parts that are unhealed, or not ok. Because you know you will be ok no matter how things turn out.
You know you can handle whatever will come because you will look after yourself and meet your needs. You're less scared of the bad thing.
That is healing.
When you are a loving, encouraging presence in your own life, it brings peace and healing.
When you are a harsh, critical, berating presence in your own life, things become HARD. You feel unsafe, the world is overwhelming and you feel you can't do anything right.
So how do you become a loving, safe presence to yourself?
It's simple.
You take small, consistent actions to meet your needs.
Which means you have to be aware of how you feel and what you need and take it seriously.
