Subject: The day it all changed.

Because I offered her breakfast...

The day I offered her breakfast...

She says that was the day everything changed for her.

And she suddenly understood this self-care thing.

She had rushed into my therapy room late, looking harassed and speaking a mile a minute.

"Sorry I’m late! I really didn’t want to be. It was madness at home this morning. Tantrums, children crying... I had to wrangle them into clothes, make them eat enough, get them into the car and then drive with them complaining all the way in the back. We only just made it in time for school. But then I was late for you and had to rush more. It’s been so crazy I didn’t even get to eat anything. I feel a bit dizzy. But it’s ok, I’ll eat later."

I sat listening to all this, sensing her frenzied state, noticing that she looked a bit pale and I felt concern about how much energy was going out of her and how little was going in.

"I have some fruit here. Can I bring you an apple?" I asked.

She stopped mid-sentence and looked at me surprised. Then squirmed uncomfortably.

"No it’s fine. Don’t worry. I’ll get something after our session."

"But how can you expect yourself to function and be present when you are hungry? Your body needs energy."

I got up and went to fetch the apple from the kitchen and brought it to her.

She looked stunned, a bit embarrassed, confused…

She awkwardly ate the apple.

The food helped her nervous system come out of crisis mode and she visibly calmed.

Then we had our session.

It was the beginning of an awakening for her.

She started to be more thoughtful about what she was choosing. Where she was putting her own self care on the list. And it was the start of her changing her life.

You can’t expect yourself to function well, if you’re not looking after yourself.

If you’re not eating well, sleeping enough, noticing when something doesn't suit you, saying no to the things that make you stressed or unhappy, saying yes to the things that make your lips turn upwards in a smile without you even realising it…

Then you won't be ok.

And when you are not ok, none of the people who love and depend on you will be ok either.

Life can be hectic. And its non-stop.

"But HOW do I look after myself when there are so many things and people to attend to?! What does looking after myself even MEAN?"

So many of my clients have asked me this question that I’ve decided we need to gather in groups and learn these skills.

I've wanted to do this for a long time but only now do I finally have the capacity to do it - and I'm very excited.
