NAB DIARY

Saturday
I arrived in Vegas on Saturday afternoon after running ICA classes in both Burbank and Brooklyn with AbelCine. This meant jetlag had already been dealt with, I even thought about going to the afternoon Flamingo pool party!
Saturday night saw me catch up with friends from home at the Aussie/Kiwi/APAC evening at the Paris casino, great to see so many guys and girls making the long trip.
Sunday
The focus for me was the 7th Colorist Mixer. Patrick Inhofer and myself had got 20 folk together in the corner of the ‘Pub’ bar in the Monte Carlo hotel back in 2013. Jump to 2019 and The Mixer is now co hosted by Mixing Light, Tao of Color and the ICA and we were expecting 300 people at Virgil’s Bar and Grill! Read more

COLOR TOUR PODCAST EP8

Alter Ego is one of the premier post facilities in the world. Based in Toronto, Alter Ego was founded 10 years ago by Australian Colorists Eric Whipp and Wade Odlum. They specialise in colouring on Baselight but the facility has grown to add VFX and production to its roster. The guys balance colouring TVCs, managing over 50 staff, and still manage to grade blockbuster feature films… How do they do it?

Topics discussed
  • Can they switch off the management issues when in a big session?
  • The boys discuss the move into using LG C7 monitors for both the colorist and the clients
  • Having to finish both English and French versions of their commercials
  • Eric graded ‘Mad Max Fury Road’ and ‘Lego Movie 2’ – How is grading a big movie different to grading TVCs?

SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE, FORENSIC DIVISION
This February 20th-22nd, I had the pleasure of conducting another BMD Certified RG123 class at Media Asylum, Singapore.
This time round it was quite interesting, it was my first time running the class for a group of people from a law-enforcement institution, in this case, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) Forensic Division.
It was a fun group, plenty of question were asked. For most of them, it was their first encounter with a non-linear editing and colour grading software.
A couple of them are familiar with Avid Media Composer (the old version) and they are looking for option on switching over to another software, DaVinci Resolve.
The first 2 days they were bombarded with new knowledge, one of the interesting statement from them was; this is after I showed them on how easy it is to change/replace colour in Resolve, one of the them said, “Oh no, this means, we can’t trust 100% of evidence that we received”.
Throughout the 3-day class they learn the basic function of DaVinci Resolve, from organising project, assemble their first edit, fine cutting their edit, introduced to Fusion, basic colour correction and final delivery.
Another question that was asked was, “Is it possible to stabilise the video and follow the license plate of a car?”
So I showed them a simple tracking function that we can do in Resolve and explain to them the basic tracking workflow.
It was a fun 3 days, lots of question from them, mostly in the matter on how the software can actually help them to analyse a video better. Hopefully now they have a better idea on what a colourist can do to alter an image so they (SPF) have a better educated guest in analysing the video evidence.
