No Regrets

If your passion has become a chore, remember the joy in your art.

“How do I do my life so that I have time for all the smaller things that I'm pretty sure feed into my "big thing"?”
- LH

This is an interesting concept. First, to identify the smaller things that are important and that feed into your “big thing”, you need to be able to identify that big thing.

There are several simple processes for identifying your number one passion. The one in discussion here is the process of elimination through the “death bed” scenario that’s about deciding what’s important by “reverse engineering” your death.

Hopefully none of us will have to go through a near death experience, but countless many who did have shared how clarifying an experience it was. The proverbial life flashing before your eyes is real and how in that flash, purpose and what’s left to do in life come sharply into focus. E.g., “I’m not ready to go… I haven’t yet ______.”

To simplify it and because for some the “death” part is uncomfortably morbid, we can call this The No Regrets Approach.

To qualify that, we need to say that it doesn’t mean never having regrets for certainly regrets and thinking we would do things differently if we could do it over again, are normal.

However, this “no regrets” goal is relative to your remaining time, and it’s relative to the “big things”. We can from this moment forward do our best to live without regrets, and especially when we’re at the door of infinity.

So ask yourself:

To have “no regrets” from this moment forward...
What is it that I definitely want to do or achieve before I leave?

Of the choices I have, (not the must do’s that are a part of life, like bills and taxes and doctors), but of the choices I have...
  1. What am I doing now that feeds that goal?
  2. What am I doing now that negates that goal?
  3. What am I doing now that’s neutral… that doesn’t serve one way or the other?

The answers to #1 should help you identify the must dos, both large and small. You can write down your must do life goal in this way:

  1. In the middle of a piece of paper, write down your must do life goal that answers the No Regrets question.
  2. Draw a circle around that.
  3. Draw rays coming from that circle like drawing a sun.
  4. At the end of each ray write the word or phrase that represents the “little things” that are a part of that big thing.

These little things will likely be some of your daily goals things that make up the larger goal in the center.

You can repeat this process more than once and then decide which “No Regrets” goal is most important to take on now. In other words, you might end up having more than one sun, or having planets and moon(s) that orbit your sun representing those things that are an essential part of your life vision ecosystem, such as family members and friends.

When it comes to your “no regrets” goals, don’t wait to begin incorporating it into your life. You make time for them by realizing their importance to you. We always make time for things that are important to us.

No regrets means that you also will not regret making the effort now. It’s never easy but always worth it!
