🌿GREETINGS FROM THE GARDEN🌷

Do you have homestead, gardening or farming dreams that you haven't yet achieved? Or perhaps you're already living your dream...?

We'd love to hear it and are sharing some of ours further below. For when we talk (or write) our dreams out loud, and take daily actions in that direction, they're more likely to be realized.

First, POPULAR POSTS from this week, followed by our week's gardening update, and then... our dream! 💜👩🏻‍🌾👨🏻‍🌾🙏🏼😇

POPULAR ARTICLES THIS WEEK

How to Grow Okra:

DID YOU KNOW... that every part of the okra plant is edible, from seeds to flowers, leaves and the unique vegetable – okra pods.

Check out growing okra plants.

MOLES!!!

Moles, voles and such can destroy an entire crop, but not always because they eat the plants.

Last week we posted about voles, this week it's the "m" word. Wherever there's one, there's often the other, but they do different things that have a similar destructive effect.

Hummingbird Moth:

We've seen 2 of these week: One juvenile hummingbird moth was stuck in our greenhouse and needed help getting out.
NOTE: THESE ARE NOT THE BAD TOMATO HORNWORM MOTHS! (Though often confused as such... details elaborated in this article):

HUMMINGBIRDS!

They're back!!! The hummingbirds showed up a couple days ago before we had the feeders out, so they flew around the house and buzzed our windows until we got the feeders up!
Hummingbird Food

One of my earliest connections to trees was with dogwood trees in bloom in our backyard. I remember my grandmother showing me a dogwood bloom and saying it bloomed around Easter time to remind us of Christ’s crucifixion. “You see the shape is that of a cross? Now look at...

WEEK'S GARDENING UPDATE - (more in detail next week)

OKAY FOLKS... if you're still with us so far... THANK YOU!

As promised, we've daring to air out our dream in public here... to get it out of our heads and onto "paper". So here we go!

OUR GARDENING AND FARMING DREAM

To Build a Gardening Community

WHAT: A Gardening Community (all is subject to creative flexibility at this point 😊):

  • Homes on 2-10 acre lots

    • Turn-key cabins (we favor cabins to start with)

      • kitchens with garden windows for growing herbs

      • Sunrooms for plants

    • Off-grid and on-grid capacity for self sufficiency

    • Permaculture design with edible landscaping, ground cover, hedges, etc.

    • Garden plots

    • Greenhouses

    • Garden sheds

    • Chicken coops

  • Community - Town Square (or circle)

    • Common areas for gathering, walking, biking and socializing

    • Country store/stand for buying/selling member garden goods and other supplies, arts and crafts

  • Farming - naturally some residents may wish to become farmers, even beyond market gardening, so that's on the vision board too! 👩🏻‍🌾👨🏻‍🌾

WHY: Community -

A community interested in being connected like neighbors of old…. a place where “everybody knows your name”, kind of thing, where people want to connect and contribute with and to each other, barter, trade and help, (while still minding their own business). 😉💜😇

We do not currently have the funds to buy the land and build this outright as spec homes to sell. However...

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME...

Based on what we’re seeing in the real estate trends given these past few years especially, there’s definitely increased migration from cities to rural areas with more people than ever interested in gardening, self sufficiency and getting back to nature and simpler ways.

So we’re confident that this is definitely a “build it and they will come” idea. We’re starting to put it out there in case there’s interest amongst investors to sponsor or partner in this idea.

We’ve built subdivisions and homes before, and though Coleman is a retired contractor, his license is current for overseeing the contracting of the project.

Okay folks! There's so much more to the vision but that’s a snapshot of our dream. We’d love to hear yours and/or your thoughts on this!

Take care and let’s keep on growing!
