Beginner’s Mind

“I have never tried that before, so I think I should definitely be able to do that.”
~Astrid Lindgren, Pippi Longstocking

The Buddhist tradition has a phrase to describe a way of being as a way to approach all things in life: Beginner’s Mind.

12 Steps to Beginner’s Mind:
(11 steps excerpted from an article in Inc, to which we’ve added a 12th step):
  1. Take one step at a time.
  2. Fall down seven times, get up eight times.
  3. Use Don't Know mind. Don't pre-judge.
  4. Live without shoulds.
  5. Make use of experience. Don't negate experience, but keep an open mind on how to apply it to each new circumstance.
  6. Let go of being an expert.
  7. Experience the moment fully.
  8. Disregard common sense.
  9. Discard fear of failure.
  10. Use the spirit of inquiry.
  11. Focus on questions, not answers.
  12. Do… without fear. Just do you.

The child dancing to the music… running through the sprinkler naked… making silly faces… painting with wild abandon, but also careful attention. She has no fear of looking silly. In fact, she revels in it. Reclaim her courage and put your creativity into the world.

“Those who matter don’t mind and those who mind don’t matter.”
~Bernard Baruch
