Subject: The Sergeants Club | October 2023

Hello,

Summer finally gave up, and we are officially in the fall here in Texas, complete with the occasional 80 degree day to remind us that we are still in Texas. We’ve had a very full October so far, between four 3rd Phase training options going strong, Unit 69’s Endurance Hike (which a couple of club members made it back to hike with Unit 69), Family Camp, and lots of Reunion prep.

Speaking of the Reunion, one thing that we are adding to the schedule this year are optional career breakouts. In the past we have had alumni who were in the military give a brief talk and do Q&A with guys interested in a military career. This year we would like to expand it to be more categories: military, police, Fire/EMS, missions/ministry, and business/entrepreneurship. They will be panel discussions with 2-5 alumni who will briefly share their career details and history, give tips for guys looking at moving into that career field, and answer questions. Total scheduled time will be up to an hour or so, depending on how many questions get asked. If any of you are interested/willing to sit on any of those panels, please let me know. Also, if you have any great suggestions of people who I should reach out and ask to sit on a panel, please pass that information along as well.

We’re already getting Reunion registrations coming through, and I am really excited to see the overall interest in attending this year. This Reunion is a huge opportunity for us to reconnect with a bunch of our alumni that we’ve lost touch with through the years, and even reintroduce the ALERT program to the alumni in some ways. I know that there are a lot of different perspectives on people’s time here, and on the program in general, but my hope and prayer is that we can continue to rebuild, or even repair, alumni relationships through this event. So please pray for the Reunion and for good relationship building and repair to happen during those four days. And then obviously come for the party February 8-11, 2024.

I have a more sober update for you all to join us in prayer for. This month ALERT was added to an existing lawsuit alleging sexual abuse. Two sisters of one of our alumni are suing their dad and brother for abuse, and have added Bill Gothard, IBLP, and ALERT to the lawsuit, alleging conspiracy on our part in the actions of their alleged abusers. The alleged abuse did not take place on campus, and none of our staff were involved. It appears that ALERT’s only connection to the lawsuit is that there was some family involvement in the ALERT Cadet program, and our being party to the suit helps keep the case in Upshur County, TX, which could offer a more favorable judge/jury to the plaintiffs. We are trying to have the lawsuit dismissed outright next month, but will probably not succeed. The process will most likely drag on for some time as deposition alone would be six months, but we are hopeful that we will be cleared in the end.

Please join us in praying that ALERT would get removed from the lawsuit as soon as possible, and/or be completely cleared. Also, please pray for the two women who are filing this lawsuit. If the allegations that they are making are true, they have experienced a terrible injustice and assault at the hands of those whom they should have been the safest with. I grieve for them and the horrific things that they have experienced. We live in a broken world, and this is another sad reminder of that fact. And as always, please do not publicly share details contained in a Sergeants Club update as they are not public.

Thank you for your prayers throughout this year; we are almost finished with the fall quarter and then on to end of year meetings and prep for 2024. As always, let me know if I can pray for you in any way.

Posteritatis commodis servientes,

1st Lieutenant Samuel Winkler | Unit 42
