Subject: The Sergeants Club | October 2022

Happy Reformation Day!

The end of the year always seems to sneak up on us at ALERT, and this year is no exception. Next weekend Unit 67 advances out of Basic Training, the weekend after that Unit 66 graduates, the week after that is Thanksgiving, and the week after that is December somehow. Not only that, but Captain Vanderford leaves this evening to take the Missions class to Mexico for two weeks, and I leave next Monday with Tech Rescue on their Mount Magazine trip for four days. Pray for safe and smooth travel and logistics for everyone traveling to and from ALERT these next few weeks.

We are currently working on the plans for the 2023 ALERT Reunion, which takes place January 27-29, 2023 here on campus. We are trying to test drive some things this year to prepare for next year when we celebrate our 30th anniversary, as well as keep making connections with alumni who we’ve fallen out of touch with. If you are able to come to the Reunion we would love to have you, and if you can help us spread the word to alumni who may not be on our email list or follow us on social media, that would also be great. Directly or indirectly as a result of last reunion we have 5 recruits in Basic Training this fall, which was really encouraging to see. We will also be having a special Sergeants Club event during the Reunion again, most likely a breakfast on Sunday morning like this past year. You can pray that all the logistics of the Reunion come together and that the event can be an encouragement to the guys who come.

Especially in light of Reformation Day today, please pray that we can accurately represent Christ, the Christian life, and the Gospel to the men in training. As I spend time interacting with alumni and hearing stories of what guys experienced at ALERT, both good and bad, I am reminded of the opportunities and dangers that we face in working with young men. It is always super encouraging to connect with guys who did training ten, twenty, or even almost thirty years ago and hear how it impacted them positively and helped set the trajectory of their lives. But we also hear from guys who had negative experiences here, or were taught things that are unscriptural or untrue, or simply experienced the results of inexperienced or immature people being given great amounts of spiritual and physical authority over others. Pray that we would not be too quick to put people into positions of leadership, that we would be careful to speak and teach with precision, that we would teach and equip our leaders well, and that God would continue to guide us as we seek to disciple the men who come here to train.

Thank you all for your continued prayer and support for ALERT, and I hope to see many of you here in January! Also, shout out to Sgt. Isac Dymseich for completing the Endurance Hike with his son, who is currently in Unit 67. He out hiked guys half his age and represented the ALERT Sergeants Club with style.
