Subject: The Sergeants Club | May 2024

Hello!

We are sprinting to the finish of the spring training semester; Unit 70 advances out of Basic Training this afternoon, and Unit 69 graduates next Friday. After that it’s a quick summer break and we start back in late June with the next semester.

Quick update on our Missions class in Iraq. They arrived safely last week, and have been doing work with Mesopotamia Frontiers International. You can see a bit of the things that they have been doing on MFI’s Instagram account. Pray for an impactful last few days in country for our guys, safe travels, and no issues with the authorities in Iraq or in the States as they travel home next week. They are due to arrive home on campus sometime Monday, just in time for Grad Week.

As we wrap up this semester there are a couple of big staffing changes coming up. Captain Vanderford has announced that he is going to be leaving ALERT by the end of the year, and will be transitioning out of his role as Battalion Commanding Officer at the end of the summer quarter in August. Captain Vanderford has been working at ALERT in various capacities since 2009 when he came through Unit 41, so his departure will leave a huge hole. He has been the Battalion Commanding Officer since 2019, so it will be a big adjustment for Sergeant Major and the guys in training. when he leaves. Phillip and I were roommates in 2nd Phase in 2010, and have been close friends ever since, so I am particularly sad that he will be leaving. The other staffing change is the Lt. Nafziger will be leaving his current role as Missions class instructor at the end of the semester. Marcus finished his term as Sergeant Major in 2021, got married, and came back to help teach the Missions class. We are in the process of replacing both Marcus and Phillip, so you can be in prayer for both those transitions as they take place over the course of the year.

One final update, Silas Whitaker and Uriah Hawley arrived safely, and both moms and future ALERT men are doing great. Thank you for praying for both families as they welcomed a new member during Basic Training.

Posteritatis commodis servientes,

1st Lieutenant Samuel Winkler | Unit 42
