Subject: Maui, HI | Potential Alumni Deployment Opportunity

August 19, 2023

Dear alumni,

On Friday we were contacted by Samaritan's Purse regarding our availability to deploy a small team (5-10 guys) from ALERT to help the victims of the devastating wildfire on Maui. At this point, SP is waiting on FEMA for final approval to set up camp in Maui. They are in the process of staging their equipment for delivery using their DC-8 cargo plane. If/when approval is received from FEMA, they will complete final loading of gear and depart for Hawaii with our team. Once on site, our team would help with setting up tents for the main buildings at base camp.

Our first choice would be to deploy men from the battalion, but if the departure for Maui is sometime within this next week, which is likely, we will need to fill these slots with qualified alumni. SP will handle all flight arrangements and travel costs for our team.

To qualify for consideration for this possible deployment, the following must apply:

  • You are in a good place spiritually in your walk with God.

  • You are in a job situation where you could leave what you're doing immediately. We are talking potentially next-day flights once you're notified that the deployment is a go.

  • You are within reasonable distance of a major airport that could get you to the departure city of the cargo plane. Again, SP would make arrangements and cover travel costs, but you must have access to an airport that has easy connections.

  • You are open ended on your return date. We cannot say for sure if the deployment will be one week, two weeks, or longer. You may be needed only for the base camp setup, or they may request that you stay and do onsite homeowners assistance as well.

Please note, your volunteering for this deployment does not guarantee you will be selected. If we do end up sending a team of alumni, the final determination of who goes will be made by the ALERT administrative staff.

Please contact Captain Phillip Vanderford at pvanderford@alertacademy.com immediately if you think you would be able to deploy. The situation is moving quickly, and the need is urgent.

Forge on!
