“But God”
Are there any two words more precious than these we find in
Ephesians 2? We were dead, without hope, and blind, “following the prince of
the power of the air” Ephesians 2:2 ESV. We were utterly lost and had no way to
better our condition. If it had not been for God’s work in our lives, we would
all have been condemned to hell for eternity. But in His mercy, God came to us
in our helplessness and made us alive. This is the gospel—the good news of our
salvation.
I’m talking, of course, to those who have trusted Jesus to save
them from their sin. If this is not true of you, let me plead with you to
consider the consequences of dying in your sin. You are not guaranteed
tomorrow, but what you are guaranteed is that one day you will die. The Bible tells
that the only way to be saved from eternal judgment is to “confess with
your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him
from the dead” Romans 10:9-10 ESV. This also is the gospel.
