In 1954, psychologist Julian Rotter created a scale to
measure whether his students felt they controlled their own success or felt their success was in the hands of fate or some outside force. One of the key
factors of developing discipline in the life of our young men here at the
Academy is helping them develop this sense of personal responsibility.
We want to help them see that they are the ones who are
ultimately responsible for their everyday choices. They have that agency; they
have the power to make better choices. We want to help them see that the first
step to making better choices is accepting responsibility for themselves and not
blaming their parents, their government, their church, or anyone else.
The Holy Spirit gives each of us the ability to change
our actions. To accept responsibility for our lives. To exercise the discipline
of self-leadership. The discipline of marching and wearing a uniform doesn’t directly carry over outside of ALERT, but the discipline of self-leadership will benefit
the men for the rest of their lives.
