Discipline is often denying yourself something now in order to gain something better later. We can do this in many ways. For example, we work out and deny ourselves the comfort of sitting on the couch now to gain the benefits of a strong and healthy body later. But we can also discipline ourselves spiritually in the same way. We can choose to spend time in the Word and in prayer to deepen our relationship with Christ. And as an encouragement, remember that the ultimate fulfillment of spiritual discipline comes not in this life, but in the one to come.
“For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:8-9 ESV
