"Discipline without direction is drudgery," — Donald Whitney.
This statement encapsulates a vital truth about the Christian life. It's easy to wonder why discipline is necessary if God has predestined our conformity to Christlikeness (Romans 8:29). Why not simply let God's work unfold and enjoy the journey without exertion?
The key lies in understanding that while God guarantees our ultimate Christlikeness, He calls us to actively pursue it in this life. We are not passive recipients waiting for holiness to arrive; we are called to strive for it (Hebrews 12:14).
This pursuit of holiness requires discipline. It's not about earning our salvation but instead cooperating with God's transforming work in us. Spiritual disciplines aren't mere rituals; they are the means of grace that shape us into the image of Christ. |
