Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | September 2024

September 19, 2024

Dear Alumni,

Unit 71 is off and running! They completed R-Night last Monday, and 55 men have now begun their journey to becoming ALERT men. One thing that makes this unit a little unique is the fact that we have seven sons of alumni coming through at the same time. It's always great to see the 2nd generation guys show up for Basic Training, and we're starting to see more and more come through. Just in this unit alone, we have a Pendergast (Unit 1), a Dankers (Unit 2), and a Tanner (Unit 3). Please be in prayer for the new unit and their cadre as they complete the adventure we call Basic Training. You can see the Unit 71 prayer calendar here.

As I wrote a few months ago, this has been a huge year of transitions for us. Captain Phillip Vanderford retired last month, and we have moved a few people around staff-wise to help fill the roles that he had been filling for so many years.

Lt. Avery Whitaker finished his time as Battalion Sergeant Major at the end of the spring quarter and transitioned into the Executive Officer role with Basic Training. Lt. Dillion Whitaker moved out of Basic Training as the XO and took on a lot of the administration and finance load from Phillip, in addition to running 2nd Phase. Cpt. Samuel Winkler moved up and over into the Battalion Commanding Officer role, and Daniel Hawley was promoted to Major and will be filling the role of the ALERT Executive Officer in addition to his role as Basic Training Commanding Officer. Please continue to be in prayer for us as we finish up the last few months of the year and navigate these new leadership moves.

Two final notes: Unit 71 will be completing their Endurance Hike next month. If you would like to join them on the hike, please reach out to Cpt. Winkler (swinkler@alertacademy.com) for details and to get on the list. And if you're in town for Family Camp next month (October 5-11), make sure to swing by the alumni bonfire, grab some ice cream, and say hi.

Forge on!
