Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | May 2024

May 30, 2024

Dear Alumni,

If there was ever an old ALERT saying that still holds true to this day, it's that the "days are long but the weeks are short". It is hard to believe that another quarter of forging has come to a close.

Unit 70 advanced out of Basic Training last Friday (yes, you read that right Northwoods guys, Unit 70) with 26 guys. We are proud to add to our growing list of 2nd generation ALERT guys with Peter Kjos advancing out of Basic. Peter's father Stephen went through Unit 23 back in 2001.

Unit 69 will graduate this tomorrow with 24 men, and then we'll have a four-week break and do it all over again. It's been a wild past few months, from sending teams to Iraq and Alaska, to ALERT guys wrecking minivans (classic), to dealing with deep and complicated heart issues with the men in training.

As we wrap up this semester, there are a couple of staffing changes coming up. Captain Vanderford has announced that he is going to be leaving ALERT by the end of the year, and will be transitioning out of his role as Battalion Commanding Officer at the end of the summer quarter in August. Captain Vanderford has been working at ALERT in various capacities since 2009 when he came through Unit 41, so his departure will leave a huge hole. He has been the Battalion Commanding Officer since 2019, so it will be a big adjustment for Sergeant Major and the guys in training when he leaves. The other staffing change is that Lt. Nafziger will be leaving his current role as Missions class instructor at the end of the semester. Marcus finished his term as Sergeant Major in 2021, got married, and came back to help teach the Missions class. Please keep us in prayer through these transitions.

God has been faithful through it all, and we are grateful for His watch and care over us. We are also incredibly grateful for each one of you, and for your prayers and support through it all.

Forge on!

Colonel Jesse Boulden | Unit 40

ALERT Commanding Officer
