Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | June 2024

June 20, 2024

Dear Alumni,

If I were to sum up this year so far into one word, it would be "transition". From a personal standpoint, my church is going through both a new sanctuary building and a new senior pastor transition, all in the same year. And from an ALERT staff standpoint, I've got multiple staff members in life transitions, with some getting married, and others adding new babies to their families.

From an ALERT structure standpoint, we have three different staffing transitions taking place as well:

  • SMaj. Avery Whitaker (Unit 62) completed his time as Battalion Sergeant Major at the conclusion of last semester, and will move into the Executive Officer position for Basic Training in the fall.

  • Sgt. Jaden Labarca (Unit 63) will transition in as the new Sergeant Major when the Battalion returns later this month.

  • Capt. Philip Vanderford (Unit 41) will be transitioning out of the Battalion Commanding Oficer position at the end of August, and Lt. Samuel Winkler (Unit 42) will be transitioning into that on role September 1st.

Please be in prayer for this upcoming semester, and for all of these men who will be taking on new leadership roles through the rest of the year. Be in prayer for the staff members who are transitioning into new seasons of life. And be in prayer for the Academy as whole, as we seek to forge men for the Kingdom. Pray that God's will would be done and His name glorified in our work.

Finally, I am excited to announce the dates for ALERT Reunion 2025! The next reunion, celebrating our 31st anniversary, will take place February 7-9, 2025 here on campus in Big Sandy. The 30th Reunion this February was a really great time of reconnecting with old friends, getting to know other alumni and their families, and spending a whole weekend cramming in as much ALERT fun as we possibly could. The ALERT staff and I definitely left the weekend a little more beat up, bruised, and tired than we started it, but also really encouraged by what God has done through the years, and excited about the future of ALERT. Mark your calendars for next year's reunion, and I'll look forward to seeing you here in February.

Forge on!
