Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | June 2023

June 22, 2023

Dear Alumni,

Two-quarters of training down this year, and two to go! Thank you for your prayers for the students and staff these last few months. It was a session of growth and forging for all involved.

As our student body is ready to return for our summer and fall quarters of training, I wanted to let you know about some leadership changes coming down the pipeline. As you are aware, for the last year and a half I have been working as both the Director of the Academy as well as the Basic Training Commanding Officer. Lord willing, all that is about to change. This coming fall, Capt. Daniel Hawley (Unit 46) will be taking over as the commanding officer for Basic Training. He has served faithfully with ALERT for the last 10 years, and I am excited to see him take on this new role. As part of this shift, we will also be bringing in Sgt. Dillion Whitaker (Unit 45) this summer to oversee and take over as the training officer for 2nd Phase. Please be in prayer for both men as they take on these new leadership roles.

As many of you know, Amazon has released a new docuseries on the Duggar family and their involvement with IBLP/ALERT over the years. After receiving a number of calls and emails from alumni about it, I thought I would take a moment to address this issue and how we are responding to it:

  1. Yes, we have viewed the docuseries, and are well aware of their claims regarding the ALERT Academy. Needless to say, it is sad to see our students, video footage, and our training taken out of context, to say the least.

  2. Our relation to IBLP today is as follows. Though we are logistically close to them (we rent space from them on the campus), we are as autonomous from them as we have ever been, at least in my 14 years here. ALERT builds its own programming the way we see fit, and none of the content we present here at ALERT comes from IBLP. Everything we show/use/teach, outside of things like our uniform standards or regulations manuals, has been externally created (i.e. resources from other ministries: Pure Desire, Desiring God, Summit Ministries, Stand to Reason, Ligonier, T4G, The Gospel Coalition, and so on, or technical training like our navigation or high angle classes)

  3. We know that we have not always gotten the training under the ALERT name right. People have been hurt during their time in training here, and we are doing our best to set that right. We recognize that we are all sinners and that we approach the work of discipling and training men with our own sinful biases, past hurts, and need for redemption. We acknowledge that only the work of the Spirit can sanctify our frail human efforts and intentions, and only the Spirit can renew and redeem our hearts and the hearts of those coming through the ALERT program.

Please keep us in your prayers. We need wisdom, humility, and clarity during this time. Also, please do not hesitate to pick up the phone and give me a call. I would be happy to talk with any of you that might have questions, concerns or even legitimate complaints or hurts from times past at ALERT.
